8 Privacy Tools Every X User Should Know About
Privacy on X involves more than deciding whether to keep an old post online. An account can expose information through years of public content, weak login security, searchable contact details, compromised credentials, browser tracking, and connections between browsing sessions. A useful privacy setup deals with each of those problems separately, because deleting old posts cannot protect a reused password, and changing a password cannot reduce an oversized public history. The eight options below cover different parts of that privacy setup, from cleaning up old content to login security and browser tracking.
1. Tweet Eraser
A long-running X account can contain posts that no longer need to remain public. Tweet Eraser provides filters to review and delete X content in bulk, instead of handling every post individually. That makes the archive useful before any major privacy cleanup. Scrolling through a current profile does not necessarily provide a complete picture of years of activity, especially when the account has accumulated thousands of posts.
It can also serve as a personal backup before you remove content. Use case: request the archive first, review older years for forgotten information, then decide what should remain public and what should be deleted.
3. X Privacy Settings
X accounts are public by default, but posts can be protected so that only approved followers can view them. When protection is enabled, new followers require approval, and protected posts are no longer publicly searchable on X.
Visibility involves more than the posts themselves. X also provides controls for photo tagging, Direct Messages, discoverability, and other privacy preferences.
One setting deserves particular attention. Users can decide whether people who already have their email address or phone number can use that information to find the associated X account. These controls appear under Discoverability and contacts.
Use case: a person who uses a pseudonymous X account can disable email and phone discoverability and review tagging permissions so that offline contacts are less likely to connect that identity with the account.
4. Bitwarden
Privacy becomes irrelevant if someone else can enter the account. Bitwarden stores passwords in an encrypted vault and can generate unique credentials instead of encouraging reuse across services. Its free account includes unlimited passwords and unlimited devices, while paid plans add further security features.
The practical benefit appears when another website suffers a breach. If every account has a separate password, one exposed credential doesn't automatically reveal the X password. Use case: replace a reused X password with a randomly generated one and store it in the password manager rather than memorizing another variation of an existing password.
5. 2FAS Auth
2FAS Auth is a free, open-source authenticator that generates one-time authentication codes and works offline. X supports authentication apps as one of its two factor authentication methods, alongside text messages and security keys. Use case: enable authentication app protection on X so possession of the password alone is not enough to complete a normal login.
6. Have I Been Pwned
An X account may be secured correctly, but its email address may have already appeared in a breach somewhere else. Have I Been Pwned lets a user search an email address against its database of known breaches and review where that address was exposed.
The service also offers free notifications for future breaches. After the email address is verified, it can send alerts when it appears in newly added breach data.
This information gives you a reason to act before suspicious account behavior appears. Use case: if the email used for X appears in a breach and the affected service shared the same password, change the exposed credentials immediately and review other accounts that may have reused them.
7. uBlock Origin
Privacy does not end at x.com. Websites can load advertising and tracking resources as you move between articles, search results, social links, and other pages. uBlock Origin is a free, open-source content blocker that blocks trackers, ads, malicious URLs, popups, and other selected web requests through filter lists.
This doesn't make browsing anonymous, but it can reduce unnecessary third-party requests during normal web use. Use case: when opening external links from X in Firefox, uBlock Origin can block many tracking requests that would otherwise load with those pages.
8. Firefox Multi Account Containers
Firefox Multi Account Containers separates cookies and website storage between different container tabs. A social account can therefore remain logged in inside one container while unrelated browsing happens in another, reducing shared cookies' ability to connect those sessions. Mozilla specifically describes social network separation as one use for the extension. Use case: keep X inside a dedicated social container and use separate containers for shopping, work, research, or personal browsing.
Privacy Checklist for X Users
A better privacy routine combines content control with account security and browser habits. Running all eight services every week is unnecessary. You can complete most of the setup once, then do periodic checks.
- Download an X archive before a large cleanup.
- Review old posts, replies, reposts, likes, and media.
- Remove public content that no longer needs to exist.
- Check whether posts should remain public or become protected.
- Review email and phone discoverability.
- Check photo tagging and follower access.
- Use a unique password stored in a password manager.
- Enable two factor authentication.
- Search the account email for known breach exposure.
- Enable breach notifications.
- Block unnecessary browser trackers.
- Consider separating social browsing from other browser sessions.
The important distinction is between historical privacy and future privacy. Cleanup deals with information already published. Visibility settings limit who can access future activity.
