Apple’s iPhone Duo and iPhone 18 Pro: What Smart Home Users Need to Know Before Upgrading
Apple’s newest iPhones are more than annual smartphone upgrades. For people who use an iPhone as the primary controller for their connected home, the new lineup brings several technologies that could matter every day, including Thread networking, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, Ultra Wideband, Apple Intelligence and a more capable version of Siri.
The lineup is also notable for the arrival of the iPhone Duo, Apple’s first foldable iPhone. It joins the iPhone 18 Pro and larger iPhone 18 Pro Max at the premium end of Apple’s smartphone family. The three models share many underlying technologies, but there are meaningful differences in displays, cameras, authentication, battery life and price.
For smart home buyers, however, the most important question isn’t which phone has the best camera. It’s how these devices fit into an Apple Home and Matter-based smart home—and whether their new connectivity and AI capabilities make controlling connected devices easier.
Here is what you need to know before upgrading.
iPhone Duo: Apple’s Foldable iPhone Arrives
The biggest departure from Apple’s traditional smartphone design is the iPhone Duo. Starting at $1,999, it features a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR folding OLED inner display along with a 5.4-inch outer display. The larger screen could be particularly useful for people who frequently use their phone to view security cameras, adjust smart home devices or work with dashboard-style apps.
The Duo’s inner and outer displays support ProMotion with adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz, Always-On functionality and up to 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness. Interestingly, Apple also adds support for the Apple Pencil (USB-C), potentially giving the Duo more tablet-like functionality.
Its foldable design could provide a genuine advantage for smart home management. A homeowner could potentially have a live security-camera feed occupying one portion of the expanded screen while interacting with controls or another app elsewhere, depending on how individual apps support the new form factor.
Apple equips the Duo with the A20 Pro chip, including a six-core CPU, seven-core GPU with Neural Accelerators and dual 16-core Neural Engine. It also has a 48MP Dual Fusion rear camera system consisting of Main and Ultra Wide cameras. Unlike the Pro models, however, it does not have a dedicated telephoto camera or LiDAR Scanner.
The Duo also takes an unusual approach to authentication. Instead of Face ID, it uses Touch ID integrated into the side button.
Battery life varies depending on which display you use. Apple rates it for up to 31 hours of video playback using the inner display and as much as 44 hours using the outer screen.
iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max: Familiar Designs With Major Upgrades
The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299. Storage begins at 256GB, with configurations extending all the way to 2TB.
The iPhone 18 Pro has a 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display, while the Pro Max expands that to 6.9 inches. Both support ProMotion, Always-On display technology, and Dynamic Island.
Like the Duo, both Pro phones run on Apple's A20 Pro platform with a six-core CPU, seven-core GPU with Neural Accelerators, and dual 16-core Neural Engine.
The Pro models get the more sophisticated camera hardware. Their 48MP Pro Fusion systems include Main, Ultra Wide and Telephoto cameras, with optical zoom options covering 0.5x, 1x, 2x, 4x and 8x. Apple also includes variable-aperture options and professional controls for aperture, shutter speed, white balance, and histogram viewing.
Battery life reaches up to 36 hours of video playback on the iPhone 18 Pro and 45 hours on the Pro Max.
For most smart home users, though, those differences are secondary. All three phones share the connectivity features that matter most to a connected home.
Why Thread Support Matters
One of the most important specifications for smart home owners is easy to overlook on a smartphone comparison chart: all three phones support Thread networking technology.
They also support Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Apple's second-generation Ultra Wideband chip.
Thread has become particularly important because it is one of the networking technologies used by Matter. Many newer Matter devices—including sensors, locks, thermostats, switches, and other low-power products—communicate over Thread rather than conventional Wi-Fi.
An important distinction for buyers is that an iPhone supporting Thread does not eliminate the need for the appropriate Apple home infrastructure. A Thread-capable iPhone should not be confused with a dedicated Thread Border Router or Apple home hub. If your Matter-over-Thread setup requires a compatible HomePod or Apple TV to provide those functions, buying a new iPhone does not automatically replace it.
What Thread in the phone does provide is another native connection technology that Apple and developers can use when interacting with compatible devices, including during smart home setup and commissioning.
For homeowners building a Matter-based smart home, Thread support helps make these new iPhones better aligned with where the connected-device market is going.
Wi-Fi 7 Could Help in Device-Heavy Homes
Wi-Fi 7 is another potentially useful upgrade, particularly for homes containing dozens of connected devices.
Your smart bulbs aren't suddenly going to operate faster simply because your phone has Wi-Fi 7. Most IoT products still use older Wi-Fi standards, and many operate on 2.4GHz networks.
The advantage becomes more apparent when the iPhone is connected to a compatible Wi-Fi 7 router or mesh network while simultaneously accessing bandwidth-heavy smart home services.
Think about viewing several high-resolution security camera streams, downloading recorded video, using video doorbells, controlling devices and streaming media at the same time. A newer wireless network can provide additional capacity for these workloads.
But Wi-Fi 7 is only beneficial when the rest of the network supports it. Buyers using Wi-Fi 5 or Wi-Fi 6 routers shouldn't upgrade their router simply because they bought an iPhone 18 Pro or Duo unless their existing network is already creating performance problems.
Ultra Wideband and the Smart Home
Apple's second-generation Ultra Wideband chip could ultimately be even more interesting.
Ultra Wideband, or UWB, enables devices to determine their relative position with considerably more precision than traditional Bluetooth proximity measurements.
That capability can support experiences where the smart home understands not simply that your iPhone is somewhere nearby, but potentially which device or area you are approaching.
We've already seen the smart home industry move toward more context-aware access and presence detection. Smart locks are an obvious example, but UWB could eventually help make interactions with lights, entertainment systems and other connected products more spatially aware.
The presence of second-generation UWB across the Duo, 18 Pro and Pro Max therefore gives all three phones a solid foundation for these emerging experiences.
Apple Intelligence and Siri Could Become the Bigger Smart Home Story
That has potentially significant implications for the smart home.
Traditional smart home voice commands tend to be rigid: "Turn on the kitchen lights," "Set the thermostat to 70 degrees," or "Lock the front door."
More capable conversational AI creates the possibility of interactions based on intent instead of predefined commands. Rather than remembering exactly what a device is called, users increasingly expect an assistant to understand what they're trying to accomplish.
That transition—from command-based control toward conversational home assistance—is potentially much more significant than another incremental increase in smartphone processing speed.
However, buyers should distinguish between the AI capabilities Apple has announced and specific smart home functions that are actually available. Having Siri AI and Apple Intelligence does not automatically mean every third-party Matter or Apple Home device will suddenly gain advanced conversational capabilities.
Device support, Apple Home integration and manufacturer implementations will continue to matter.
Matter Compatibility: What Changes—and What Doesn't
Buying an iPhone 18 Pro or Duo won't magically make an incompatible smart device compatible with Apple Home.
Matter can make cross-platform smart home integration easier, but compatibility still depends on the device, its Matter implementation, supported device type and the ecosystem features exposed by the manufacturer.
That makes compatibility checking just as important as before.
Before buying a smart lock, thermostat, camera, sensor, light or appliance, determine whether it works with Apple Home, Matter, Thread or the manufacturer's own app—and whether all the features you want are available through your preferred platform.
This is especially important because "Matter compatible" does not necessarily mean identical functionality across every smart home ecosystem.
Which New iPhone Is Best for Smart Home Owners?
For most smart home users, the iPhone 18 Pro is probably the sweet spot. It provides the same A20 Pro platform, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, Thread networking and second-generation Ultra Wideband connectivity as the more expensive models while starting at $1,199.
The iPhone 18 Pro Max makes more sense for users who want maximum battery life and a larger 6.9-inch display. That extra screen space can be useful when checking cameras or navigating device dashboards, and up to 45 hours of rated video playback gives it the strongest battery specification of the three.
The iPhone Duo is the most interesting option for heavy smart home users who value screen real estate. Opening a 7.6-inch display to view cameras, floor plans, dashboards and connected-device apps could turn the phone into something closer to a portable smart home control panel.
But at $1,999, that convenience carries a substantial premium.

If you're upgrading primarily because of your smart home, there probably isn't enough reason to spend $1,999 on the Duo solely for better device control. The iPhone 18 Pro delivers essentially the same underlying smart home connectivity technologies at a considerably lower starting price.
The bigger story is the combination of Thread, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, second-generation Ultra Wideband and increasingly capable on-device AI.
Together, these technologies point toward the next stage of smart home control: phones that don't simply display device controls but increasingly understand where devices are, how they're connected and what the user is trying to accomplish.
For Apple Home and Matter users, that could ultimately prove much more important than the camera improvements or even Apple's first folding display.
Before buying, however, remember the most important rule of building a smart home: the smartphone is only one piece of the ecosystem. Your home hubs, Thread Border Routers, Wi-Fi network, Matter controllers and individual device compatibility still determine what you can actually control.
The iPhone Duo, iPhone 18 Pro, and iPhone 18 Pro Max provide Apple users with a more capable control point. Whether they make your smart home substantially better will depend on what is already connected around them.
