GoPro Labs drops new abilities like motion triggers for the Hero8 and others

GoPro Labs just gave users some new toys, with a drop today of several features that extend how GoPro users can control their cameras.

The seven new abilities are focused on how cameras can be controlled and even triggered to start filming, with some designed for the more advanced operator and at least one meant to help new users with the way they use their GoPro as well.

The new features will work on the Hero9 Black, as above, as well as Hero8 lack, Hero7 Black and the GoPro MaxGoPro

Up first is one called Camera Motion Triggers, which taps into the GoPro's accelerometer or the gyroscope to start and stop filming, and can help retain more storage and also battery life for the device. A second, USB Power Triggers, created the same start and stop action, but uses USB power detection as its prompt. Motion detection is now expanded in to all video modes as well including 360º motion detection on Max.

There's also a Simplified Live Streaming QR code, which lets people program live streaming to start once the camera is linked to a specific Wi-Fi network, and a one-button mode is now available — ideal for new users — which basically locks a camera mode into place, only allowing an operator to start and stop capture and prevent camera modes from accidentally changing. And Hero9 Black users now have new QR code controls in 5K and HindSight capture mode.

Finally there are new exposure modes, including a timed exposure lock and a minimum shutter speed settings.

While GoPro cameras are known for their ability to capture action shots, they can be used as well as dash cams and even webcams, a feature many have tapped in the past year.

These newest abilities will work on four different GoPro cameras, the Hero9 Black, which launched in fall of 2020, the Hero8 Black, the Hero7 Black and the GoPro Max. Owners can update their devices from the GoPro Labs site, which also brings the latest firmware to their cameras as well.

Additionally, GoPro is inviting GoPro Labs users to submit their best shots to the Anything Awesome Challenge, where they can enter to win prizes from cash rewards to having their content posted on GoPro's social channel.
