Wyze Cam Outdoor

For $50, the Wyze Cam Outdoor will monitor your home — and hotel room

Wyze, a brand known for budget smart home devices, is coming out with a new outdoor camera, a home security device priced at just $49.99 for a camera and base station, which is designed to be set up inside a home, and plugged into a router.

The camera is available starting today, although deliveries won't start until the middle of July.

What you'll get

The Wyze Cam Outdoor records HD video in 1080p, supports two-way audio, is wire-free, has night vision up to 25 feet, a six-month battery and has a IP65 rating that makes it dust tight and water resistant up to a direct water jet hit, although not one that super powerful. The camera also has motion detection — which picks up on body heat to know if there is a human in the field of view, and not a branch moving in the wind.

You'll be able record short clips of video when motion is detected, and store these in the cloud for 14 days. Pay for a subscription to the Wyze service for $1.49 a month, and you can record a longer clip. At home, the camera will connect to the base station inside your home, and Wyze recommends you have the camera and base station within 50 feet of each other without a lot of interference between the two. But the camera can travel too, and work as a Wi-Fi hot spot while on the road.

Wyze's lineup includes an indoor security camera, one that also include night vision, two-way audio, as well as HD video — all for just $20. It also an 8X zoom built into the camera, like the new outdoor device. But neither have AI person detection, a feature that was actually pulled from the Wyze indoor camera in recent months through a software update.

The new Wyze Cam Outdoor has a similar look, with a round face centered on a square body — but here, with the new outdoor device, the camera attached magnetically to its base.

While you can pick up the camera and base station today, you'll be able to order a solo camera for just $39.99 in the near future.
