Samsung to change phone naming convention with new Galaxy S20

Samsung is expected to announce its new flagship range of smartphones at a launch event on February 11. But instead of revealing the Galaxy S11, it now looks like the company will skip all the way to 20.

Coinciding with the year, Samsung is instead expected to announce the Galaxy S20, larger Galaxy S20 Plus, and an even bigger handset called the Galaxy S20 Ultra. 5G variants of all three models are expected.

These handsets leaked online over the weekend, via a set of photographs published by XDA Developers. The images show the phone's startup screen which clearly states the "Galaxy S20+" name.

The images also show how the phone will be 5G compatible, and a photo of the rear shows no fewer than four camera lenses.

These are expected to include a regular wide angle lens, plus ultra-wide and portrait options, and a new macro lens for taking extreme close-up images. The front camera sits behind a central 'hole-punch', the same as that used by the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.

The overall design of the phone has also changed from the Galaxy S10. Gone are that phone's curbed edges, instead replaced by a phone which looks to have a completely flat display - something Samsung hasn't featured on its flagships for years.

The Galaxy S10 family are expected to be some of the most popular smartphones of 2020, along with the new 5G compatible iPhones and Google Pixel handsets due in the fall.

Samsung's February 11 launch event is also expected to feature a new folding phone. Tipped to be called the Galaxy Z Flip, the phone is reminiscent of the new Motorola Razr, where the display folds vertically instead of horizontally, as it does on the Galaxy Fold. This handset is expected to be dramatically cheaper than the $1,980 Fold, at around $840, but little else is known about it for now.
