Reolink Duo 3 WiFi Review: 16MP Security Camera Covers an Impressive 180 Degrees

Outdoor security cameras typically force homeowners to make a tradeoff between image quality and coverage. A camera with a wide field of view can monitor more of your property, but sometimes at the expense of detail or with noticeable distortion around the edges.

The Reolink Duo 3 WiFi takes a different approach. Instead of relying on a single ultra-wide lens, Reolink uses two lenses and stitches their images together to produce a massive 180-degree panoramic view.

Priced at $219.99, the Reolink Duo 3 WiFi is the company's first 16MP outdoor security camera with Wi-Fi 6. It features 7680 x 2160 resolution, dual-band 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi 6, person/vehicle/animal detection, Motion Track, two-way audio, spotlight color night vision, up to 512GB of microSD storage, and support for 24/7 recording.

We installed the Duo 3 WiFi on the side of a home and used it throughout the summer to monitor a backyard with average Wi-Fi coverage. After our testing, its biggest strengths were easy to identify: outstanding coverage, excellent video quality, and plenty of ways to store recordings without requiring a monthly cloud subscription.

There are, however, a few things buyers should know before installing one.

What is the Reolink Duo 3 WiFi?

The Duo 3 WiFi is a wired-power outdoor security camera that connects wirelessly to your home network. Don't confuse "WiFi" with completely wireless: the camera doesn't use a rechargeable battery. It requires access to a power outlet.

Its defining feature is its dual-camera design. Two 1/2.7-inch CMOS sensors capture images that Reolink combines into one panoramic 16MP image at up to 20 frames per second.

The result is a 180-degree horizontal and 55-degree vertical field of view.

That unusually wide horizontal coverage can make the Duo 3 WiFi particularly useful for monitoring a backyard, driveway, side yard or other large area where you might otherwise need two conventional security cameras.

The camera is also IP67 weather-resistant and rated to operate between 14 degrees and 131 degrees Fahrenheit, making it suitable for permanent outdoor installation.

Reolink Duo 3 WiFi specifications

The Reolink Duo 3 WiFi is a dual-lens, plug-in outdoor security camera built around two 1/2.7-inch CMOS sensors. Together, the lenses produce a 7680 x 2160, 16-megapixel image at up to 20 frames per second, with a wide 180-degree horizontal and 55-degree vertical field of view. Each fixed 2.8mm lens has an F1.6 aperture, which helps the camera capture more light in darker conditions.

For nighttime monitoring, the camera combines six 850nm infrared LEDs with eight 5W, 6500K spotlights. Reolink rates the infrared night vision range at up to 100 feet (30 meters). With the spotlights enabled, the Duo 3 WiFi can provide color night vision; when they are off, nighttime footage is captured in black and white using infrared illumination.

The camera supports dual-band 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi using IEEE 802.11 ac/ax/a/b/g/n standards, including Wi-Fi 6, along with WPA, WPA2 and WPA3 wireless security. It also includes a 10/100Mbps RJ45 Ethernet port, which is particularly useful during initial setup.

For local storage, the Duo 3 WiFi supports a microSD card up to 512GB. Recording options include motion-triggered recording, scheduled recording and continuous 24/7 recording. It also supports time-lapse recording.

Smart detection features include standard motion detection along with person, vehicle and animal detection. Audio is handled through a built-in microphone and speaker for two-way communication.

The camera requires 12V DC, 2A power, reinforcing an important buying consideration: this is a Wi-Fi camera, but it is not battery-powered. You will need access to an electrical outlet near the installation location.

Reolink rates the Duo 3 WiFi IP67 for weather resistance, with an operating temperature range of 14°F to 131°F (-10°C to 55°C) and operating humidity of 10% to 90%. The camera measures 195 x 103 x 56mm and weighs 622 grams. Reolink includes a two-year limited warranty.

For smart-home use, Reolink lists Google Assistant as the Duo 3 WiFi's supported smart-home platform.

Setting up the Reolink Duo 3 WiFi

Reolink describes the setup process as three basic steps: connect the camera to your router using Ethernet, configure Wi-Fi through the Reolink app, and then disconnect the Ethernet cable.

Based on our experience, don't skip that first step.

We initially attempted to set up the Duo 3 WiFi without connecting it directly to the router and ran into pairing problems. Connecting the camera to the router with an Ethernet cable solved the issue.

Our recommendation is to perform the initial setup indoors, close to your router.

Connect the Duo 3 WiFi directly to the router with Ethernet, open the Reolink app on your iOS or Android device and complete the network setup. Once the camera is successfully connected to your Wi-Fi network, disconnect the Ethernet cable and move the camera to its permanent outdoor location.

We followed that process and then installed the Duo 3 WiFi on the side of our home overlooking the backyard.

Once configured properly, the camera connected reliably to our network even though Wi-Fi coverage in that part of the property was only average.

The dual-band Wi-Fi 6 support helps here. Users can connect over 2.4GHz for greater range or 5GHz when faster wireless performance is available.

One installation consideration is power.

Unlike a battery-powered outdoor camera, the Duo 3 WiFi requires a nearby electrical outlet. That limits where some homeowners will be able to install it without running additional power.

We would like to see Reolink offer a solar-powered option for this type of camera. But given the Duo 3 WiFi's high-resolution dual sensors and ability to continuously record, wired power has advantages for homeowners who want around-the-clock surveillance.

Excellent 16MP video with very little distortion

Video quality was one of the Duo 3 WiFi's biggest strengths during our testing.

The 16MP image was extremely clear, and the camera's panoramic picture allowed us to monitor virtually our entire backyard from one location.

More importantly, the dual-camera image stitching worked remarkably well.

Ultra-wide security cameras can sometimes create substantial distortion, particularly when digitally zooming into an object near the edges of the image. We saw very little of that with the Duo 3 WiFi.

Using pinch-to-zoom in the Reolink app, we could examine objects within the image while maintaining surprisingly good detail.

The 180-degree field of view was equally impressive. The two lenses work together extremely well and provide the kind of coverage that could potentially replace two conventional cameras depending on your property layout.

For homeowners trying to monitor a broad driveway, backyard or the entire side of a house, this is arguably the Duo 3 WiFi's most compelling feature.

Night vision performance

The Duo 3 WiFi provides two types of night vision.

Its infrared system can produce black-and-white nighttime images, while eight built-in spotlights and the camera's F1.6 aperture enable color night vision when the spotlights are active.

Reolink rates its infrared night vision at up to 100 feet.

During our backyard testing, nighttime video remained clear, and we could easily see objects at least 30 feet from the camera.

Interestingly, our nighttime image was primarily black and white rather than the color image we expected from a camera equipped with eight spotlights. In our installation, bushes were located relatively close to the camera, and light reflecting from the vegetation may have affected how the scene was illuminated.

This highlights why placement matters with any spotlight security camera.

Users can adjust the spotlight brightness or turn the spotlights off through the Reolink app. The siren can also be customized or disabled. By default, the spotlight and siren can activate in response to detected motion.

With the spotlights active under appropriate conditions, the camera can produce color nighttime video. With them off, expect infrared black-and-white images.

Overall, we were satisfied with the Duo 3 WiFi's nighttime performance.

Motion Track and AI-powered detection

Another useful feature is Reolink's Motion Track.

Instead of making you scrub through an entire video clip to understand how someone moved through the camera's field of view, Motion Track can summarize the person's movement in a single image.

For a camera covering 180 degrees, that's particularly useful because a person can travel a considerable distance across the monitored area.

The Duo 3 WiFi can distinguish between people, vehicles and animals, helping homeowners reduce irrelevant alerts.

Reolink also offers AI-powered Perimeter Protection features, including line crossing, zone intrusion and zone loitering alerts.

For example, you can establish a virtual line across part of your property and specify a direction. If a person, vehicle or animal crosses that line from the designated direction, the camera can trigger an alert.

That makes the Duo 3 WiFi more than a camera that simply reacts whenever pixels change within the image.

Reolink app and remote viewing

Most day-to-day control happens through the Reolink app, available for Android and iOS.

The app lets users view live video remotely, receive motion alerts and notifications, customize motion zones and review previously recorded events.

Smart Playback helps filter stored footage based on event types and timelines, which becomes especially important if you're using the camera for continuous recording.

We found the app straightforward to use during testing. Pinching into the high-resolution panoramic image was particularly useful because the 16MP resolution provides enough detail to make digital zoom genuinely practical.

Lots of local storage options and no required monthly fee

Storage flexibility is another major reason to consider the Duo 3 WiFi.

A microSD card of up to 512GB can be installed directly in the camera for local storage. Reolink recommends compatible cards using the FAT32 format and Class 10 read/write speeds.

The camera also supports Reolink's Home Hub Series, Reolink NVRs and FTP/NAS storage.

Existing Reolink owners may find this particularly attractive because the Duo 3 WiFi can be incorporated into a larger Reolink surveillance system and supports continuous 24/7 recording with compatible NVR hardware.

For buyers trying to avoid another monthly subscription, local recording is a major advantage.

Google Assistant smart home integration

The Duo 3 WiFi works with Google Assistant.

That means owners can view a live camera feed on compatible Google Nest smart displays and TVs compatible with Google Assistant by using voice commands.

For example, after properly naming and connecting the camera, you can say:

"Hey Google, show me the backyard."

The camera's live feed can then appear on a compatible Google Nest Hub, Chromecast-enabled TV or Android TV with Google Assistant.

This can be particularly convenient when the camera is monitoring a driveway, backyard or entrance and you want to check what's happening without opening the Reolink app.

Alexa households should take note, however: the Duo 3 WiFi does not support viewing its feed on Amazon Echo smart displays.

Two-way talk is adequate, but not a standout feature

The Duo 3 WiFi includes a microphone and speaker for two-way communication.

It works, but we weren't particularly impressed with the audio performance.

Voices weren't as strong or clear as we would like when communicating with someone outside. That's not unusual among outdoor security cameras we've tested, especially when wind, traffic, and other ambient noise are present.

We consider two-way audio a useful secondary feature here rather than one of the primary reasons to buy this camera.

What other owners are saying about the Reolink Duo 3 WiFi

Our experience is broadly consistent with feedback from other Duo 3 WiFi owners.

Verified buyers frequently praise the 180-degree field of view and image quality. One owner reported that a single Duo 3 WiFi could see the full width of a driveway and praised its ability to capture enough detail to read license plates. Another said the camera replaced two older Reolink cameras, while another buyer purchased two Duo 3 WiFi cameras and liked them enough to purchase two more a month later.

Other buyers have specifically praised integration with Reolink's Home Hub and the ability to cover a large area with a single camera.

The feedback isn't universally positive. Some owners have reported that the spotlight isn't as bright as expected, while others have experienced unwanted motion notifications caused by movement such as trees or passing clouds. Camera positioning has also been mentioned as something buyers should consider because the mounting adjustment may not accommodate every desired downward angle.

Overall, owner feedback reinforces what we saw in testing: image quality and exceptionally wide coverage are the Duo 3 WiFi's primary strengths, while lighting, mounting position, and motion settings may require some experimentation.

Who should buy the Reolink Duo 3 WiFi?

At $219.99, we think the Reolink Duo 3 WiFi is an excellent choice for someone looking for a high-quality outdoor Wi-Fi security camera that doesn't require paying a monthly fee to store video locally.

It's especially well suited for homeowners who need to monitor a large area.

The 180-degree field of view means one Duo 3 WiFi may be able to cover an area where two traditional cameras would otherwise be necessary.

Existing Reolink owners should also consider it. Compatibility with Reolink NVRs and the Reolink Home Hub makes it relatively easy to add the Duo 3 WiFi to an existing security system.

Google Assistant households get another benefit through voice-controlled camera viewing on compatible smart displays and televisions.

And if you're just beginning to secure the exterior of your home, the Duo 3 WiFi is a strong camera to build around because of how much territory it can monitor.

GearBrain verdict

The Reolink Duo 3 WiFi impressed us during real-world testing.

Its combination of 16MP video and a seamless 180-degree panoramic field of view provides excellent coverage without the severe distortion we sometimes see from ultra-wide security cameras. Video remained sharp when digitally zooming, Wi-Fi performance was reliable in an area with average coverage, and nighttime video was clear enough for us to identify objects at least 30 feet away.

We also like Reolink's approach to video storage. Support for up to a 512GB microSD card, Reolink Home Hub, NVR and network storage gives homeowners multiple ways to keep footage without forcing them into a monthly subscription.

There are some compromises. You need an electrical outlet nearby, the initial Ethernet connection should be considered mandatory rather than optional; two-way audio could be better; and Alexa users won't be able to stream the camera onto an Echo Show.

But those limitations don't outweigh what the Duo 3 WiFi does particularly well.

For less than $200, you're getting a high-resolution outdoor security camera with Wi-Fi 6, intelligent detection, flexible local storage, and enough horizontal coverage to potentially do the job of two conventional cameras.

If your priority is seeing as much of your property as possible from a single outdoor camera—and you have an outlet nearby—the Reolink Duo 3 WiFi is easy to recommend.
