The first thing we noticed after opening the box was just how premium the Sense Pro feels.
Schlage has built smart locks for decades, and that experience shows.
The lock feels solid without appearing bulky, and unlike many older smart locks, the interior housing doesn't dominate the inside of your door. Schlage says installation takes only a screwdriver.
That's technically true.
The physical installation itself is straightforward for anyone who has installed a deadbolt before.
The interactive digital instructions are excellent, and the lock fits standard residential doors between 1⅜ and 1¾ inches thick.
However, there are a few areas where first-time installers should pay attention.
The small connector cables between the interior and exterior assemblies require careful handling during installation, and the small mounting screws are easy to drop if you're working alone.
These aren't major issues, but they're worth mentioning.
Overall, installation took us roughly the same amount of time as other premium smart locks.

Setting Up the Schlage Home App
One important thing homeowners should know before beginning setup is that the built-in Wi-Fi supports only 2.4 GHz networks.
If your router combines 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks under one SSID, you'll want to verify that your phone and the lock are connecting over the 2.4 GHz band during setup. Failing to do so can lead to pairing issues that may appear to be lock problems but are actually network configuration issues.

One of the biggest selling points of the Sense Pro is Matter compatibility.
In theory, setup should be simple.
In practice, our testing showed that Matter setup can require patience.
We initially attempted pairing using an Aqara M3 Hub, an official Matter controller supporting Thread, Zigbee, Apple Home, Alexa, and Google Home.
The first pairing attempt failed.
After removing the lock from the Schlage app, resetting the installation process, and beginning again using the Matter setup instructions included in the box, pairing completed successfully.
One recommendation we strongly suggest is using the printed Matter QR code included with the installation materials rather than trying to scan the tiny QR code located inside the lock housing. The printed card is significantly easier to read during setup.
Once paired, Matter worked as expected.
We were able to create basic automations through the Matter controller, including locking the door automatically after motion events and incorporating the lock into scenes with other Matter-compatible devices.
However, today's Matter ecosystem still limits the sophistication of these automations compared with platform-specific smart home systems.

What You Need Before Buying
Apple users should understand that purchasing the lock alone isn't enough to experience every feature.
To fully utilize Apple Home, you'll also need one of the following Thread-enabled Apple hubs:
- Apple TV 4K
- HomePod (2nd Generation)
- HomePod mini
Without one of these devices, you'll lose remote access and several Apple Home automations.
You'll also need:
- iPhone 11 or newer (excluding iPhone SE and 16e) running iOS 18.5 or later for hands-free UWB unlocking
- Apple Watch Series 6 or newer running watchOS 11.5 or later
During our testing, we paired the lock with an iPhone 11 Pro and Apple Home. Although the setup eventually completed successfully, the process required several attempts. The Sense Pro repeatedly timed out before finally connecting, and we found it worked best when the lock, phone, and Apple hub were all located close together during pairing.
Once connected, however, basic Apple Home control worked reliably.
Ultra Wideband (UWB) Performance
Rating: 7.5/10
Ultra Wideband is the feature that separates the Sense Pro from nearly every other smart lock on the market.
It's also the feature that still needs the most refinement.
Schlage deserves tremendous credit for pushing residential smart locks beyond simple geofencing.
Rather than unlocking when your phone enters a predetermined radius around your home, Schlage Converge attempts to understand whether you're actually walking toward your door.
When it works correctly, it's remarkable.
Unfortunately, during our testing, we could not consistently get the hands-free UWB unlocking experience to perform as advertised.
We tested multiple configurations, including Apple Home and Matter, but hands-free unlocking remained inconsistent.
In our experience, tapping the lock with an iPhone or Apple Watch using Apple Home Key worked every time.
Entering a PIN code also worked flawlessly.
It was only the fully automatic "walk up and unlock" experience that proved inconsistent.
Whether this is caused by Apple Home, Thread networking, Matter, firmware, or some combination of all three remains difficult to determine.
Because the underlying technology is so new, we suspect future firmware and platform updates will improve performance.
Today, however, buyers should view UWB hands-free unlocking as an exciting feature that is still evolving rather than a completely mature technology.

Matter Compatibility and Automations

Matter compatibility is another major selling point for the Sense Pro.
Once we successfully paired the lock with our Aqara M3 Matter Controller, basic automations worked as expected.
For example, we were able to:
- Lock the door automatically as part of a security routine.
- Include the lock in smart home scenes.
- Control the lock from the Matter controller's app.
- Integrate it with other Matter-certified smart devices.
However, buyers should understand that today's Matter ecosystem is still developing.
Compared with long-established platforms like Apple Home or SmartThings, Matter automations remain fairly basic.
During testing, we were unable to use Matter to fully reproduce some of the advanced experiences Schlage advertises through Apple Home.
That's not necessarily Schlage's fault.

If batteries are completely depleted, Schlage provides one of our favorite backup solutions—a USB-C jump-start port on the exterior of the lock.
Simply connect a portable USB-C battery pack, enter your PIN code, and the lock temporarily powers on long enough for you to enter your home.
This eliminates one of the biggest concerns homeowners have about keyless smart locks.
