There are some limitations, however, particularly for Android users and remote control through Apple Home. Here's what we learned during our testing.

What is the SMONET AH1?
The SMONET AH1 is a connected deadbolt designed to replace the existing deadbolt on a standard residential door. It combines traditional physical access with biometric, mobile, keypad, and smart home controls.

One of our favorite things about the SMONET AH1 is the number of ways you can get through the door.
Depending on how you count smart home and remote access methods, there are up to eight ways to control or unlock the AH1:

Apple Home Key Is the AH1's Standout Feature
If you own an iPhone or Apple Watch, Apple Home Key is arguably the biggest reason to consider the AH1.
Instead of opening an app, entering a code, or carrying a physical key, you can use a compatible Apple device to unlock the door.
During our testing, this quickly became one of our preferred methods of using the lock. If you already wear an Apple Watch, unlocking the front door from your wrist is especially convenient because you don't even have to pull your phone out of your pocket.
This also makes the AH1 interesting for someone starting to build an Apple-based smart home. You can use the lock with Apple Home while adding other compatible devices around it over time.
Android users, however, should understand that they won't get the complete Apple Home Key experience. Android users can manage and operate the lock through the app, but Apple Home Key itself requires Apple's ecosystem.
Therefore, we consider the AH1 a better smart lock for Apple households than Android-only households.

Matter Support Expands Smart Home Compatibility
Another reason we like the AH1 is its Matter support.
Matter is designed to make compatible smart home devices work across multiple ecosystems instead of locking consumers into one platform. For households combining devices from different manufacturers, that interoperability can be valuable.
However, there's something important to understand before buying any Matter device: you may need a compatible Matter controller for your preferred smart home ecosystem.
Depending on your setup, a compatible smart speaker, smart display, streaming device, or smart home hub may already serve as your Matter controller.

Our testing, however, uncovered an important wrinkle when using Apple Home.
We experienced instances where the lock was non-responsive through the Apple Home app when our iPhone was away from our home Wi-Fi network and connected only through cellular service.
At first, this surprised us.
After looking further into how the system works, we found that remote Apple Home control requires the appropriate Apple home hub infrastructure. In practical terms, Apple users planning to control their lock remotely through Apple Home should make sure they have a compatible Apple TV or HomePod properly configured as their home hub.
That's an important distinction between the AH1 having Wi-Fi and remote access through Apple Home working independently of Apple's home architecture.
During our testing, local operation and the lock's various direct access methods were more straightforward than remote Apple Home control.

Fingerprint and Passcode Access
Apple Home Key may get most of the attention, but fingerprints are another useful way to operate the AH1.
Fingerprint access is especially convenient for children or family members who don't have smartphones. Instead of remembering a passcode or carrying a key, they can simply use their registered fingerprint.
The lock can store up to 100 fingerprints or passcodes, giving most households plenty of capacity.
Is 100 a lot?
Compared with some premium smart locks we've tested, it's not an industry-leading number. For example, the Schlage Sense Pro can support significantly more access codes.
But realistically, most residential users aren't going to come anywhere close to needing 100 individual credentials. Even a large family could assign access to family members, relatives, guests, contractors, cleaners, dog walkers, and other regular visitors without approaching the limit.
And among Apple Home Key locks we've tested, having capacity for 100 credentials is competitive enough for typical residential use.
Design and Build Quality
The AH1 also made a positive impression from a design standpoint.
The lock has a solid feel and uses a zinc-alloy body. Its exterior is rated IP64 for weather resistance, making it a reasonable choice for exterior doors exposed to rain, dust, and changing weather conditions.
That can be especially important if your front or back door doesn't have a storm door, screen door, porch, or substantial overhang protecting the lock.
We also like the backlit touchscreen keypad.
It's a small detail until you arrive home at night and need to enter a code. The illuminated numbers make the keypad considerably easier to see in low-light conditions.
The lock supports both left- and right-hand doors and is designed to fit common residential door sizes. SMONET lists the AH1 as compatible with doors approximately 1-3/8 to 2-1/8 inches thick.
What Happens if the Batteries Die?
Battery failure is something every smart-lock owner eventually has to consider.
Fortunately, the AH1 includes multiple backup options.
First, you still have a traditional mechanical key. Second, the exterior lock includes a USB Type-C emergency power connection, allowing you to temporarily power the lock if its internal batteries are depleted.
That's a feature we like seeing on smart locks because it provides another layer of protection against getting locked out.

Using the AH1 With Alexa and Google Assistant
The AH1 isn't limited to Apple Home.
It can also work with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, making it more flexible for homes that don't use a single smart home ecosystem. SMONET officially lists support for Apple Home, Alexa, and Google Assistant.
That makes the AH1 potentially useful in mixed-platform households—for example, a family using iPhones and Apple Watches personally but also having Alexa speakers or Google smart displays around the house.
However, buyers should pay close attention to how integrations are implemented and which Matter controller or home hub their ecosystem requires. Not every feature exposed through one smart home platform is necessarily available through another.
What We Liked About the SMONET AH1
After several months of testing, several features stood out.
Apple Home Key is convenient. Being able to use an iPhone or Apple Watch instead of opening an app or typing a passcode is one of the AH1's biggest advantages.
There are plenty of access options. Fingerprint, Home Key, passcodes, IC fobs, app control, smart home control, and physical keys mean family members aren't forced to use the same method.
The fingerprint reader is useful for families. Children and other household members don't necessarily need smartphones or keys.
The backlit keypad is easy to use at night. It's a simple design feature, but one we appreciated during everyday use.
IP64 weather resistance adds versatility. The AH1 is better suited to exposed exterior doors than locks designed primarily for protected entryways.
Matter broadens its smart home potential. Users aren't limited to building around a single manufacturer's proprietary ecosystem.
The price is compelling. With an MSRP of $169.99 and a current promotional price we observed of approximately $109.99, the AH1 competes aggressively with smart locks costing considerably more.
What Could Be Better
No smart lock is perfect, and we encountered a few issues buyers should know about.
The biggest issue involved remote Apple Home control.
During testing, we found that Apple Home remote access wasn't always as straightforward as expected when our iPhone was away from Wi-Fi and using cellular service. Apple users need the correct Apple home hub configuration—such as a compatible Apple TV or HomePod—to get the remote experience they may expect.
We would also like the distinction between built-in Wi-Fi, Matter control, and Apple Home remote control to be clearer during setup. Consumers often assume that "built-in Wi-Fi" automatically means every supported smart home app can control a device remotely without additional requirements. That's not necessarily how smart home ecosystems work.
Android users should also recognize that they're buying a lock whose most distinctive feature—Apple Home Key—isn't available to them. The AH1 still works with Android through the app, but an Android-only household may find other smart locks that are better optimized for its needs.
Finally, while support for up to 100 fingerprints or codes should be more than enough for most homes, there are competing smart locks with substantially higher credential capacities.

Who Should Skip It?
We wouldn't put the AH1 at the top of the list for an Android-only household. It works with Android, but you'd be paying for Apple Home Key functionality you can't use.
It also isn't our first choice for homeowners whose main requirement is deep integration with a professionally monitored security system.
For example, if your home revolves around a professionally installed and monitored system such as Vivint or ADT, verify lock compatibility with that system before buying. Don't assume Matter, Alexa, Google Assistant, or Apple Home compatibility automatically means the lock will integrate with the security provider's alarm platform.
This is exactly the type of compatibility question consumers should answer before buying a connected device.

After using the SMONET AH1 for several months, we think it offers a strong combination of features and value, especially for Apple users.
Apple Home Key is the star of the show. Being able to walk up to your front door and unlock it with an iPhone or Apple Watch is convenient, and SMONET doesn't force everyone else in the household to use the same method. Fingerprints, passcodes, IC fobs, app access, smart home controls, and mechanical keys give families plenty of alternatives.
Matter support also makes the AH1 more interesting for consumers building a multi-brand smart home rather than committing entirely to one manufacturer's products.
Our biggest reservation involves remote Apple Home control. Buyers need to understand the role of an Apple Home hub and shouldn't assume that built-in Wi-Fi alone guarantees remote Apple Home operation under every circumstance.
At its $169.99 MSRP, the AH1 is competitively priced. At the roughly $109.99 promotional price we saw during this review period, it becomes considerably more attractive.
