Withings’ new Pulse HR fitness tracker has a 20-day battery life

Just two months after Withings freed itself from the grasp of Nokia, the French health tech company has launched its second new wearable.

Following the Steel HR Sport hybrid smartwatch, the new Pulse HR is an updated version of the Pulse, one of Withings' first products.

The new model includes all the features you would expect from a fitness tracker, including a heart rate monitor which records data constantly while you exercise, and takes a reading every 10 minutes when you're not.

The device automatically detects and records walking, running and swimming, plus over 10 more activities, and there are a further 20 which can be selected manually; there is also automatic sleep tracking.

There's also connected GPS, which means the Pulse HR records the location and route of your outdoors walks and runs by connecting to your smartphone over Bluetooth.

Made from stainless steel and with a vertical OLED display, the wearable is water resistant to 50 meters, so you can use it to records your lengths in the pool, and Withings claims the battery life is an impressive 20 days. If this turns out to be accurate in everyday use, then it's almost three times longer than that of the Fitbit Charge 3.

As with all Withings products (and those previously branded as Nokia Health), the Pulse HR sends its data to the Health Mate smartphone app, available for iOS and Android. Here, data can be viewed alongside that collected from other Withings products, like its smart scales and sleep trackers.

The simple display of the Pulse HR shows smartphone notifications, like messages and incoming calls, but is not intended to act like a fully-fledged smartwatch. Instead, and like other fitness trackers, it is designed to deliver the basics alongside a long battery life.

The Withings Pulse HR is on sale now, priced at $129.95. It is only available in black at launch, but the company says more colorful bands are coming in 2019.
