Z-Wave is a wireless standard — if a device works with Z-Wave, and connects across the network, it will link and connect with any other device that also works with Z-Wave too. To date, there are more than 700 members of the Z-Wave Alliance, building thousands of smart home devices including those from Abode, Fibaro, Schlage, Vivint,Yale and more.

Ring, which was purchased by Amazon in 2018 for $1 billion, makes home security devices including video doorbells, security cameras and home surveillance systems. The company's Ring Alarm Security Kit, is the first suite of devices bundled together to add SmartStart, a Z-Wave feature, which is now mandatory for all devices that are being built on the Z-Wave 700 platform.

SmartStart, essentially, makes it very simple to link Z-Wave devices together — you just scan a QR code and you're ready to start using a product, even before it's out of the box.

"The desire to feel safe and secure at home continues be a powerful driver of smart home adoption," said Mitchell Klein, Z-Wave Alliance's executive director. "With Z-Wave as the leading IoT technology in the residential security market, we're thrilled to be adding one of the biggest DIY security players to our Board of Directors to lend their voice and expertise. We believe that together we can continue to give consumers everywhere peace of mind and make Z-Wave the most deployed smart home protocol in the world."
