Space heaters have been around for decades, but most modern versions fall into two camps: simple manual heaters or fully connected smart heaters that rely on Wi-Fi, apps, and cloud services. The Emerson SmartVoice 25" Tower Space Heater ES200ER introduces an interesting middle ground.

This tower heater is voice-activated but not connected. It does not require Wi-Fi, an app, or integration with smart home ecosystems like Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, or Apple Siri. Instead, Emerson built voice recognition directly into the device.

In fact, this is the first non-connected voice-activated device I’ve tested since launching GearBrain. For years, I’ve reviewed smart home products that rely heavily on connectivity and cloud services. This heater proves that voice control can exist entirely offline, offering a unique blend of convenience and privacy.

After testing the Emerson SmartVoice tower heater for several weeks in a home office, here is everything you need to know before deciding whether it belongs in your home.

Key Features of the Emerson SmartVoice Tower Heater

Offline Voice Control with SmartVoice Technology

The most unique feature of the ES200ER is its SmartVoice technology, which supports 40+ preset voice commands.

Instead of connecting to a cloud service, the heater processes voice commands directly on the device. This provides several benefits:

  • No Wi-Fi required
  • No smartphone app required
  • No data collection or cloud storage
  • No setup or account creation

To activate voice commands, simply say:

“Hey Heater”

The device then listens for commands like:

  • Turn on
  • Turn off
  • Rotation on
  • Set timer to 2 hours

The interaction feels similar to using a smart speaker, but the entire system operates locally.

For people concerned about privacy or complexity, this approach is refreshing.

Designed for Accessibility

Another strength of the SmartVoice heater is its accessibility.

Because it does not rely on a smartphone app, the heater can be useful for:

  • Seniors
  • Individuals with limited mobility
  • People with visual impairments
  • Users who prefer simple technology

The voice commands allow hands-free control, while the LED touch panel and remote control provide additional ways to adjust settings.

Powerful Heating with 1500W Output

The Emerson tower heater delivers 1500 watts of heating power, which is standard for many personal space heaters.

It includes three operating modes:

  • Fan mode
  • Low heat
  • High heat

During testing, the heater did a very good job warming a small room quickly. Within minutes, the temperature in a home office noticeably increased.

Oscillation for Even Heat Distribution

The heater includes 65° oscillation, which allows the airflow to sweep across a wider area.

This feature helps distribute warm air more evenly throughout the room instead of heating just one spot.

I found this especially helpful when working at a desk because it prevented one side of the room from getting too hot.

Built-In Safety Features

Safety is always a critical consideration when choosing a space heater.

The Emerson SmartVoice heater includes several important protections:

Tip-over protection
If the heater is knocked over, it automatically shuts off.

Overheat protection
The device shuts down if internal temperatures become unsafe.

Cooling shutdown cycle
After turning the heater off, the internal fan continues running until the unit cools down.

I particularly liked this last feature because it helps extend the life of the heater and improves safety.

Sleep Timer

The heater also includes a 1–7 hour timer, allowing you to run the device for a specific period before it shuts off automatically.

This is useful for:

  • Bedrooms
  • Dorm rooms
  • Home offices
  • Overnight heating

My Experience Testing the Emerson SmartVoice Heater

After several weeks of testing, here are my real-world impressions.

What I Like

Effective Heating

The heater performs exactly as expected.

It warms a small room quickly and consistently.

For spaces like:

  • Bedrooms
  • Home offices
  • Dorm rooms

…it works very well.

Lightweight and Portable

One of the most convenient features is how lightweight the heater is.

At only 5.7 pounds, it’s easy to move from room to room.

If you want to bring it from your office to your bedroom at night, that’s simple to do. It has a nice convenient handle.

Oscillation Improves Comfort

The rotating airflow helps distribute heat evenly throughout the room.

Without oscillation, many space heaters can feel too intense in one spot and too cold elsewhere. The Emerson heater avoids that problem.

Privacy-Focused Voice Control

The offline voice control is arguably the most interesting feature.

Many consumers are concerned about smart devices listening to conversations or sending data to the cloud.

Because this heater processes commands locally, it offers a privacy-friendly alternative.

What I Didn’t Like

While the heater works well overall, there are several areas where improvements would make it even better.

Limited Heat Settings

The heater offers only two heating levels:

  • Low heat
  • High heat

You cannot set a specific room temperature.

The LED display shows a temperature reading, but it does not function as a thermostat..

Instead, the number simply reflects the operating mode.

For users accustomed to smart thermostats or programmable heaters, this may feel limiting.

No Scheduling Feature

Another missing feature is scheduling.

You cannot program the heater to turn on or off at specific times.

The only automation option available is the 1–7 hour timer.

Voice Commands Are Limited

Although the heater supports 40+ commands, they are limited to a predefined list printed on the included instruction card.

Unlike cloud-based assistants, the heater cannot interpret flexible language.

This means you must use the exact supported commands.

Remote Batteries Not Included

The heater includes a remote control, but batteries are not included.

The remote requires AAA 1.5V batteries, which are fairly standard but still something you need to buy separately.

Including batteries in the box would improve the out-of-box experience.

Maintenance and Cleaning

Keeping the heater clean helps maintain performance.

Emerson recommends:

  • Unplugging the heater before cleaning
  • Wiping the exterior with a damp cloth
  • Checking vents for dust buildup

The filter should be cleaned every 2–4 weeks.

Steps include:

  1. Unscrew the back cover
  2. Remove and wash the filter with warm water
  3. Allow it to dry completely
  4. Reattach the cover

Final Verdict

The Emerson SmartVoice 25" Tower Space Heater ES200ER is a refreshing take on smart appliances.

Instead of relying on cloud services and smartphone apps, Emerson built offline voice control directly into the device.

For users who value privacy, simplicity, and ease of use, this approach works very well.

The heater performs its primary job—warming a room—effectively, and features like oscillation, tip-over protection, and a cooling shutdown cycle add to its safety and usability.

There are a few limitations, including the lack of temperature control and scheduling. However, for the price, the heater still delivers solid performance.

If you want a heater that combines voice convenience with zero connectivity, the Emerson SmartVoice heater is worth considering.
