Press Release:

Penthera's FastplayTM Improves Consumer Experience

Pittsburgh, PASeptember 8, 2016 -- Penthera, creator of the industry-leading download-to-go software, has released a new version of its Cache&Carry™ solution that dramatically enhances content security and usability and eliminates most start-up buffering. Penthera's release follows this week's Apple announcement that iOS 10 will support download and offline playback of FairPlay protected content.

Penthera's Cache&Carry allows any streaming content provider to add "download and play later" to its mobile apps. The newest Cache & Carry version will add:

  • A total solution for Apple FairPlay and Google Widevine Digital Rights Management (DRM) during streaming, downloading and offline playback
  • Penthera's FastplayTM, a buffer-free video launcher

Dan Taitz, Penthera's COO said, "Our DRM enhancement will save our customers time and money. Fastplay eliminates the buffering problem that is a leading cause of consumer dissatisfaction with mobile video."

"There's no question that mobile video viewing has reached critical mass. One in three Americans watch video on their mobile phones, along with 100 million people who watch video on tablets. With their audiences consuming content across mobile devices, content creators must be ready to deliver to mobile devices 24/7 and that requires download functionality," he added.

Cache&Carry now seamlessly integrates with license servers using Apple's FairPlay or Google's Widevine DRM. For customers using FairPlay or Widevine DRM, this means that Penthera's software delivers a studio-approved DRM with best-of-breed download functionality already included.

Penthera's Fastplay™ feature enables mobile video app users to launch videos the instant they hit play. Fastplay relies on Penthera's patented download technology to pre-position small segments of video on a user's mobile device. This eliminates delay that frustrates users when they click the play button.

The industry is adding download-to-go capability in response to skyrocketing consumer demand for access to video on mobile devices. It's been widely reported that by 2020, video will account for more than 75% of the world's mobile data traffic, up 20% from 2015 – the highest growth rate of all mobile applications. Consumer behavior is changing and dictating that streaming video services accommodate the ability to watch video on the go. Watching TV on the go has become the new normal, with viewership on mobile devices eclipsing viewership on desktops, laptops and other connected devices.
