A new set of Apple AirPods is potentially on their way in just two months, as early as May, at an event that has yet to be announced by Apple — and may not happen given the current coronavirus pandemic.

Jon Prosser of Front Page Tech tweeted his prediction, adding that the AirPods were supposed to be at a March event that was never held. Instead Apple was quiet through March, and then released the iPhone SE 2 in April through an online notice. Prosser's Apple predictions have been fairly accurate so far — he also predicted the date for the new iPhone SE correctly.

Now, the AirPods could come in May, alongside a new MacBook Pro. Unable to hold big events at Apple's Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino, CA., the company pushed out its latest iPhone without the fanfare of a live event. When Apple could return to its event schedule is unknown, given the coronavirus sweeping across the country.

The AirPods Pro, the most recent earbuds from Apple, just appeared in October 2019. Those are the third version of Apple's wireless earbuds, which first launched in December 2016. Apple then released a second version in March 2019 which upgraded the earbuds with a wireless charging case.

The Apple AirPods Pro version include active noise cancellation and are also sweat and water resistant.

Rumors hint that the new AirPods would not be a new version of the $249 Pro model, but one that would be lower priced. Prosser says the new model "are now ready to go."
