Volkswagen caused a lot of excitement when it revealed the ID Buzz concept back in 2017, and after a long wait it has now confirmed the electric van will land in the US in 2023.

The company hasn't yet revealed the production version of the ID Buzz, but if it looks anything like the concept then it will surely be a hit. The concept is styled to look a lot like the classic VW Bus of the 1950s and 60s, also known as the Camper and the Type 2, but with an electric drivetrain.

A production version of the ID Buzz will join VW's ID range of electric vehicles, which currently includes the ID3 hatchback and ID4 crossover, in 2022, with US deliveries beginning in 2023 with the 2024 model year ID Buzz.

VW confirmed to Car and Driver that the ID Buzz will be available as passenger and commercial versions in Europe, but the company only has plans to bring the former to the US. Europe will also get exclusive access to a choice of long and short wheelbases, while again only the former is destined for the US.

Although not confirmed just yet, it is thought that the ID Buzz could be offered with three battery sizes, rear- and all-wheel-drive options, and power output ranging from 200 to 300 horsepower. Range isn't known for now, but it should be respectable given the space in the van's floor for a large battery pack.

VW hopes to offer a commercial version of the ID Buzz as an autonomous vehicle in Europe, but that is likely to come some time after the regular Buzz's 2022 release date.

The German company's ID range is growing quickly, with plans also afoot to release a coupe version of the ID4 called the ID5, plus a larger version called the ID6 and destined for the Chinese market. A concept called the ID Space Vizzion has also been revealed by VW, which should turn into a form of premium wagon/estate once it reaches production.
