Google's plan to end its Works with Nest program is causing an avalanche of responses from smart home brands. The latest is Lutron, which sent an email to its customers on Wednesday, alerting them that Lutron's system integration with Nest products is going to be affected.

Google is ending the Works with Nest program starting August 31, 2019. All Google Home products have now been renamed, Google Nest, and Nest products will not be controlled through the Works with Google Assistant system. The company also cut ties with If This, Then That (IFTTT) for all Nest devices as well.

Smart home brands, including Control4, with devices that work with Nest products are starting to reach out to customers to alert them to changes — if any — to their integration with Nest devices. As Google ends the Works with Nest system, companies are not sure if Nest products, like their sensors and smart thermostats, will continue to work with their own.

Lutron is also known for its smart shade line, Serena by Lutron, which customers can order online, picking out styles, fabric, sizes and even the kind of remote control they want to use. The company also produces smart lighting and dimming switches, along with other controls including timers and sensors. Many of these have been able to be integrated with Nest devices, including the Caséta by Lutron, RA2 Select, Radio RA 2 and HomeWorks QS — all mentioned by Lutron in its email as being impacted by the new change to Nest's support.

Lutron assured customers that all four systems will continue to have support through Google Assistant via voice control, Google Home and Google Assistant, as well as the Home View on Google-enabled smart displays. But integration with Nest "…will be impacted, making some or all integration features inaccessible starting August 31, 2019," said the email from Lutron.

The company promises to keep customers updated as the Works with Nest program ends, and how Lutron's customers may be able to move forward.
