Wearable maker Mobvoi has announced the latest addition to its TicWatch smartwatch range. Called the TicWatch Pro 2020, it is an update to the 2018 model of the same name.

The watch uses Mobvoi's so-called Layered Display technology, where a color AMOLED sits below a transparent LCD display. The former shows all of the smartwatch graphics and apps we're used to, while the monochrome LCD just shows the time, plus simple information like battery life, the date, and your daily step count.

Because the AMOLED can be switched off and the LCD uses very little energy, the watch can last a huge 30 days between charges, if only the LCD is used. Mobvoi says with 'smart mode', where the AMOLED is on more often, the watch still lasts a respectable two to five days. Mixed usage will see the watch battery range from two to 30 days.

Also new for the TicWatch Pro 2020 is a tougher build that now meets the 810G military standard. This means the watch can survive sudden temperature changes between -30C and 70C (-22F to 158F). It can also work in environments of 57 kpa pressure, 44C solar radiation and 95 percent humidity, while being secured against salt, sand and dust.

More RAM than its predecessor (now 1GB) means it can more accurately track your daily activity, exercise and sleep, Mobvoi says. There's also NFC for contactless payments via Google Pay, IP68 water resistance, integrated GPS, a heart rate monitor and the watch runs Google's Wear OS software.

The watch case is on the large side, measuring 45mm in diameter and 12.6mm at its thickest point. The circular display is 1.39 inches and has a 400x400 resolution.

This is all rather impressive from Mobvoi, but unfortunately the TicWatch Pro 2020 uses the somewhat archaic Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 2100 processor, instead of the newer and more powerful Wear 3100 chip.

Still, at $260 we think this watch will appeal to those who want a smartwatch that is tougher than most and has great battery life thanks to its trick dual-display design. It goes on sale in early march and is available from Amazon and Mobvoi directly.
