Samsung is to hold its next Unpacked smartphone launch event online on August 5, when the next Galaxy Note is expected to be revealed.

Online events are quickly becoming the norm across the consumer technology and automotive industry, as large gatherings are still not permitted due to the global coronavirus pandemic. Apple recently hosted its WWDC keynote address online and pre-recorded for the first time, while BMW used a live virtual reality event to announce a major software update for its cars.

The Samsung Unpacked event will kick off at 10am ET on August 5 and be available to watch at Samsung.com. A teaser video for the event published this week showed the tip of the company's S Pen smartphone stylus, finished in a new bronze color.

The teaser comes just a week after Samsung appeared to accidentally publish images of an unreleased smartphone on its Russian, Ukrainian and Chinese websites. The images, embedded in a tweet below, showed the back of a smartphone finished in the same bronze color, complete with S Pen stylus.

It is therefore highly likely that the August 5 event will feature the next generation of Galaxy Note smartphone, expected to be called the Note 20, and it will be available in the new bronze color. The images were soon removed from Samsung's websites, but clearly showed a smart looking rear camera module with three large lenses.

Real-world photos (as opposed to marketing images) of the Note 20 have also surfaced online this week, adding further evidence that the phone will be announced soon. There could also be a top-end model called the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra.

Despite seeing the new phone in official images, we still don't know much about the Note 20 family. But with the launch event still almost a month away, we expect more information to leak out between now and then.

Samsung said this week that Galaxy Unpacked will be a "virtual event to explore our latest ecosystem of Galaxy devices designed to empower your life." Describing them as an ecosystem suggests the company has more than just a new Note and improved S Pen to show off. The company might also reveal the next generation of Galaxy Fold, which is tipped to be going into mass production soon ahead of an August reveal.

And don't forget we are still – still – yet to see the Galaxy Home smart speaker, which Samsung first announced back in August 2018, but is yet to go on sale or even get a price tag and feature list.
