ADT, months after its $450 million investment from Google, is now adding new features to its home security system. These abilities center around Nest security devices as well as new tools that include allowing Google's smart assistant to control much of ADT's system.
To start, ADT users will be able to purchase Google and Nest products directly through the security firm including the Nest Mini, Nest Hub Max smart display and the Nest Hub. ADT will also arrange for these device to be installed, although they're fairly simple to put into a home now.
But Google Assistant will also be able to integrate in with ADT as well. This brings Google's smart assistant into play for hands free control — and that allows people to ask for doors to be disarmed, or armed, just by asking aloud. The voice assistant is one of three dominant AI systems, including Amazon Alexa and Apple's Siri, that brings voice control into a home.
Google made the $450 million investment into ADT in August 2020, and at the time it was expected that new integrations, like these, would start appearing in early 2021. While Google has its own smart security services, including the Nest Secure, this partnership expanded access to its products to a larger customer base including 5,000 ADT smart technicians.
ADT has more products under its umbrella than locks, and so this control will be extended too to ADT's thermostats and lights that fall under its umbrella as well.
Current ADT customers can purchase the three main devices — the Nest Mini, Hub and Hub Max, now and those who use Blue by ADT, a more DIY-friendly home security option, can buy the Nest Mini at the Blue by ADT web site.
