The new partnership with August lets hosts automate the renting process, letting guests open the door for themselves through an August Smart Lock Pro, so hosts don't have to be there when people arrive. Codes, then, automatically expire when renters check out from their space.

If hosts have an August Doorbell Cam, they can also see guests when they arrive and give them a face-to-face welcome — and actually let them if you prefer to keep using a physical key. For HomeAway hosts, they'll need to use an August Smart Keypad for the new feature to work.

Connected gadgets are making their way into homes — even those that are rented by vacationers from Airbnb and HomeAway. The devices, from smart locks to smart thermostats, can help to manage properties from maintaining temperatures, to keeping spaces secure.

The new partnership with August not only makes renting easier for hosts, it also gives them insight into how often guests are coming in and out of the space by just getting a notification through their smartphone app. They can even see video of guests coming in and out of the home — giving renters some space, and hosts some assurances that their property is secure.
