During these times of coronavirus lockdown and social distancing measures, we're all looking for ways to keep ourselves entertained and sociable. And, while classic board games like Scrabble are perfect for families stuck at home together, there are also options to play with friends online, or by yourself, and often for free.
Classic word game Scrabble, in board form, is currently on a one- to two-week shipping delay from Amazon, as the retailer focusses on delivering essentials first. But thankfully Hasbro has Scrabble Go for iOS and Android, which is free to download and play.
Although the game has earned some poor reviews recently, since the developer was switched from EA to Scopely, we at GearBrain have played it on an iPhone and had no problems at all. Despite being free, the game doesn't bombard you with in-app purchases or adverts at all, and we found it works smoothly. Scrabble purists might not be keen on the collection of gems and other digital tinsel, but this can mostly be ignored and setting up a game only takes a few seconds.
In-app purchases are available, but without them you can still jump into the game and play Scrabble as normal. Being a Hasbro product, the game uses the official Scrabble scoring system, tiles and dictionary, so you know you're getting the authentic experience without any changes.
The game lets you play with random strangers, or you can log in with your Facebook credentials to play against Facebook friends too.

If you would rather play on the computer, there's an official Scrabble game for Facebook too, made by EA for Hasbro Gaming. That's available here.
Alternatively, and if you're in the mood for some other classic board games, there's the Hasbro Family Fun Pack. This is made by Codemasters and is available for PC through the Steam store, as well as for Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
This $15 pack includes Scrabble, as well as Monopoly Plus, Trivial Pursuit and Risk, making it a great option for anyone craving classic board games. All four titles can be played against friends online
If you would rather play Scrabble on your own against a computer — perhaps as a way to practice before playing against friends — then there is Classic Words Solo. This is free, has a 4.7-star rating, and is available for iOS and Android. It isn't an official Scrabble game, but works in almost exactly the same way, and is free. You can adjust the difficulty of the artificial intelligence, making it accessible for Scrabble players of all skill levels.
