Sonos, a pioneer in sound experience, has unveiled a groundbreaking update to its app, transforming how users interact with their audio content. This major redesign will launch globally on May 7, 2024, through a software update for existing S2 products and a brand-new web app, marking a significant evolution in how music, podcasts, and audiobooks are accessed and enjoyed.

The redesigned Sonos app centralizes control of over 100 streaming services into a single, customizable home screen, eliminating the need to switch between multiple tabs. This unified approach not only enhances user convenience but also caters to the personalized tastes of each listener. With the ability to pin, move, and manage content rows on the home screen, users can tailor their audio experience to their listening preferences, ensuring their favorites are always front and center.

Patrick Spence, CEO of Sonos, highlighted the company’s commitment to innovation and user feedback as the driving forces behind the redesign. “We introduced the world to multi-room music over 20 years ago and are proudly playing in over 15 million homes today. As we are always pushing ourselves to innovate, and listening to feedback from our passionate customers, we felt now was the time to reimagine our app experience,” said Spence. “After thorough development and testing, we are confident this redesigned app is easier, faster, and better. It once again raises the bar for the home music listening experience and sets up our ability to expand into new categories and experiences.”

Maxime Bouvat-Merlin, Sonos' Chief Product Officer, addressed the challenges of modern streaming landscapes, such as fragmented services and varied content offerings. “Today’s streaming experience has become fragmented across multiple platforms due to varied content offerings, algorithmic curation, or simply the desire to not recreate playlists in multiple locations,” said Bouvat-Merlin. “As the only audio brand with an open platform offering extensive choice, Sonos makes it easy to control your system and curate your favorite sounds all in one place. Our reimagined app delivers the industry’s most streamlined streaming experience by bringing a world of content and intuitive control to the Home screen.”

Key features of the new Sonos app include:

  • Fast Access to Favorites: The Home screen aggregates recently played items, service libraries, and recommendations, allowing users to revisit their favorite sounds with minimal navigation.
  • Comprehensive Search Function: A global search feature enables users to find music or podcasts directly from the Home screen across all connected services, enhancing discovery and access.
  • Advanced System Controls: A simple swipe up from the Home screen grants immediate access to system controls, speaker grouping, and volume adjustments, providing a seamless management experience across all Sonos products.

Moreover, introducing a web app compatible with any modern browser extends the flexibility of system control, ensuring that users can manage their audio setup from various devices, not just mobile phones.

As part of its launch, Sonos is also introducing an Early Access Program, allowing select customers to experience the new features before the official release. This initiative reflects Sonos' dedication to refining its products based on real-world usage and feedback.
