With just a couple of months to go until we expect to see a new iPhone from Apple, rumors of what the new handset will be like are gathering pace.

The first tidbit of news to leak out of Apple's supply chain, reported by the Economic Daily News, is that Apple won't be calling the next model the iPhone 12S. The company often launches new phones in a 'tick-tock' format, with a number update one year, followed by an S update the next.

Instead, for 2021 it is claimed Apple will jump from 12 to 13, and the iPhone 13 family will include the same members as before. This means we'll see an iPhone 13 mini, a regular iPhone 13, an iPhone 13 Pro and a larger iPhone 13 Max.

What's also interesting here is Apple's use of 13 at all. Samsung skipped from Galaxy 12 to Galaxy 20 with its iPhone rival, and due to the number's association with bad luck it was thought that Apple might do the same, either skipping to another number or changing the naming convention entirely.

It is also claimed this year's iPhone family will have the same display sizes as the iPhone 12 range, meaning 5.4 inches for the mini, 6.1 inches for the iPhone 13 and 13 Pro, and 6.7-inches for the iPhone 13 Max.

This week also saw claims by smartphone leaker Max Weinbach that the iPhone 13 could feature a large wireless charging coil for better heat management, and higher wattage for faster charging. Weinbach has also previously said how the iPhone 13 will have stronger MagSafe magnets on its rear, helping it fit more securely to compatible accessories, like wallets and mounts.

It has also been suggested that the larger charging coil could indicate the inclusion of reverse wireless charging. As seen on smartphones from other manufacturers, this could lead to the iPhone 13 wirelessly charging an AirPods case or Apple Watch when placed on its back. It was separately claimed by Bloomberg that Apple is working on a future iPad with reverse wireless charging.

With just a couple of months to go, we expect to see plenty more iPhone 13 news, rumors and speculation ahead of the big reveal. Apple is also likely to announce a new Apple Watch at the same event this fall.
