Despite the coronavirus pandemic Apple is still working on its next iPhone, which is expected to launch in September and go on sale shortly afterwards.

As usual, that launch will follow a string of rumors and leaking about the new handset. The latest information to leak out, surfacing online over the weekend, claims the new phone will see improvements to its display, rear camera, and Face ID system.

The claims come from the YouTube channel of EverythingApplePro. It is said the new iPhone 12 will feature a 120Hz display that uses the same refresh technology as the ProMotion display used by the iPad Pro.

This means a doubling of the iPhone's refresh rate (that is, the number of times the display refreshes per second), and therefore a smoother picture. This update is particularly noticeable when scrolling through content, or playing a game that supports a 120Hz refresh rate.

It is claimed the iPhone's display will switch between 60Hz and 120Hz automatically, depending on what the user is doing, in a bid to save battery life.

However, it is believed the ProMotion technology will be limited to the iPhone 12 Pro, which is expected to come in 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch versions. To help power this display technology, the iPhone 12 is expected to get a larger battery, potentially up to 4,400mAh in the 12 Pro Max model. This should also help offset the extra power demands of the new iPhone's 5G technology.

The new report also claims the iPhone 12 will have a small display notch for housing its Face ID sensors, and the system will work at wider angles than it does on the current iPhone 11.

Finally - at least for now - is the claim that the iPhone 12 will have a rear camera with better low-light performance, faster autofocus and improved image stabilization. Autofocus is expected to be improved with help from the same Lidar sensor as seen on the back of the new iPad Pro.

Despite the pandemic, Apple has been able to launch a range of new products recently, including a refreshed MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and iPad Pro, and the new iPhone SE. As such, it looks like the new iPhone 12 will be revealed as normal, at some point in September. However, it has been reported that some models won't go on sale until slightly later in the fall, as Apple did with the iPhone X and XR.
